Today's Word:
"Ben Bartley"
Today's Picture:
This is the first time in a long time I have Googled my own image. I am glad to see this one is making it up the charts. I took this photo in Oregon. I was traveling for IBM at the time. For some reason, the hotel where I was staying made me "Guest of the Day". They gave me a basket of fruit & candy. They put my name on a plaque. It was random and great. So I took a picture.
Way back when I started this blog, this used to be the picture that came up when you Googled "Ben Bartley".
It has now moved down to fourth position. I am not sure why it moved down to fourth position. It is a much cooler picture... and definitely not me.

Six days after this Top 5 moment in your life, Arizona lost to Oregon in Eugene by a score of 14-10. Heading in to that game, Arizona was 5-1 and ranked in the AP poll. That game turned out to be the begining of a truly terrible run. Arizona lost the next 5 games to finish 5-6. Dick Tomey left and John Mackovic took over leading Arizona straight to the cellar of the Pacific 10 conference. Arizona has not been to a bowl game since you and I made that trip to Eugene. I think we should do it again to get rid of the demons. Clearly we offended the college football deities - or atleast you did.
Some highlights from that trip include -
1) We bought a 6-pack of assorted beer from the Portland Brewing Co. In our hotel (the Hilton) we did not have a bottle opener so we called room service for help. They sent up the bartender but he did not have a spare bottle opener so we had him open them all. I think we were already drunk when we had him do that.
2) Walking up to some bar in Eugene and the bouncer wanted me to take off my hat, button my shirt, and tuck it in. I said, "I think this isn't our type of place." We laughed and moved on.
3) Driving out to Florence on the coast. It was beautiful. I also remember seeing the terrible looking logged out sections of the forest.
4) Stopping at a winery between Florence and Eugene. I bought a terrible bottle of red wine.
5) You talking to Jim Livengood at the Wild Duck Brewery during the alumni tailgate.
6) Jim Livengood pretending he remembered you. (Okay, I'm sure he did remember you.)
7) Asking for a taxi at our hotel because we decided to go to a ballet. The taxi driver turned out to be a menopausal woman and it was suddenly very uncomfortable. I stepped up and asked her to take us to a ballet. Everybody in Eugene quickly learned we were going to a ballet as she had to get on the radio and get a recommendation about which ballet to take us to.
8) Sharing a cab back to the Hilton with some big fat Oregon fan.
9) That hangover. It was one of the worst I have ever had.
10) The drive back to Portland was the worst and the best. I remember I could see Mt. Hood, Mount St. Helens, and Mt. Rainier at the same time but I wasn't enjoying it at all. I just wanted to sleep. We were nearly late for our flights.
10) I don't think we said goodbye. We just sort of separated as you went somewhere and I went to Phoenix.
I liked number 10 so much that I wanted there to be two! -db
Um, how come Darrell never takes me to the ballet?
